The provider must assess your English and academic capability for the course. English-test results can support genuine intentions but INZ does not make IELTS/PTE results mandatory for every applicant; follow the provider's course-specific evidence requirements.

Show tuition funding separately from living costs. Self-funded tertiary/English/non-compulsory study requires NZD20000/year or NZD1667/month for study under a year; compulsory Years 1–13: NZD17000/year or NZD1417/month. Alternatively provide evidence of an acceptable sponsor (sharing ID/online process) or guarantor (INZ1014 and own, non-loaned funds). If applying in South Asia as a citizen of India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal or Bhutan, only immediate family may sponsor/guarantee. A credible funding plan for subsequent years strengthens the application; those future funds need not be available now. Outward-ticket funds are additional.

Provide an approved provider's offer stating course, duration and study mode, with its signed assessment of course suitability, English and academic capability. Returning students may provide enrolment confirmation. From outside NZ, a conditional offer permits assessment/approval in principle; an unconditional offer is needed before visa approval.

You must genuinely intend to study and meet visa conditions. INZ considers your application evidence, circumstances and previous applications. Provide explanations/evidence relevant to your case or requested by INZ; this guidance does not impose a separate universal Statement of Purpose form or letter.

Good character is required. Police certificates are normally required at age 17+ when total NZ time across visas/visits reaches 24 months: citizenship countries and countries lived in for over 5 years since age 17; certificates must be under 6 months old on application. Exceptions: certificates previously supplied and issued within 36 months, or applicants under 20 with continuous NZ student visas/interim study conditions since 17. INZ can request new certificates. A receipt is not a substitute, except the direct-delivery arrangements for Fiji, Hong Kong and Israel.

Good health is required, but medical/X-ray evidence is conditional. Full fee-paying students usually need no medical certificate; stays under 6/12 months normally need no X-ray/medical certificate respectively. For stays over 6 months, X-ray is required for non-low-TB citizenship or over 3 months in a non-low-TB country during the last 5 years. A new X-ray is required after 6 consecutive months there since the previous X-ray when the NZ stay exceeds 6 months (including time already here). Evidence must be under 3 months old on receipt; INZ may request either test.
